I think that the FAQ included shipped with Celestia 1.6.0 should assume that version. ** Celestia 1.5.x is drawing planets and moons bright red. Why? - In Workaround 2, no need to mention Celestia v.1.3.2 and 1.4.0 workaround ** I want to seeel all possible Celestia eye candy. - Don't mention haze; this is a deprecated feature of Celestia. All the text devoted to it keeps the answer from being as concise as it should be. The short and appropriate answer is that any graphics card that supports OpenGL 2.0 will show all the Celestia eye candy. Something like this: "Any graphics card with at least 128MB of memory and support for OpenGL 2.0 pixel shaders will be able to show everything that Celestia is visually capable of. Look for a graphics card that advertises either support for Direct3D shader model 2.0 or higher. Almost all graphics cards being sold today meet this requirement, albeit with varying degrees of performance. High-end NVIDIA and ATI cards will provide the best experience in Celestia. NVIDIA's OpenGL drivers have tended to have fewer bugs than ATI's." Recommendations: ATI Radeon HD series GeForce 8xxx, 9xxx, and GTX 200 series I think that might be all that we need to say to users looking to buy a new graphics card. Most of the other hardware (e.g. Nvidia MX cards, ATI Rage) isn't even being sold right now. Most of the current text for this FAQ item belongs in a section titled something like, "How will Celestia perform on my system?" We should eliminate the "Starting with Celestia v1.3.2" ** Sometimes when Celestia captures an image of its window, there's an ugly bright rectangle in the picture. Is this really still a problem? ** Celestia's galaxies are ugly, dim, grey blobs. Eliminate "Since version 1.4.0 Celestia incorporates an improved rendering of galaxies." ** Sometimes a screenshot captured in Celestia will have multipled boxes around it, as if multiview was on. I've never seen this--is it happening in recent versions of Celestia? If so, let's group it with the other screenshot-related items in the FAQ. ** When I try to capture a picture or movie, the image is stretched out of proportion. This sounds like a bug with anti-aliasing with older cards/drivers. I don't know that we should remove this item from the FAQ, but it would be helpful to mention that this problem is more likely to appear with older cards. ** My planet's rings are drawn as featureless oval. This should be completely rewritten. I'd suggest this: "You need to use a smaller ring image, one that is no wider than the maximum texture size supported by your graphics card. To find out what this size is, use the "OpenGL Info" option in Celestia's help menu. For most graphics cards, the texture size limit is at least 2048." ** Satellites orbiting the Earth are drawn extremely bright with no shading. This item seems obsolete and should be removed. ** Celestia still crashes, draws funny stuff, or is extremely slow. I'd prefer that people report bugs on the SourceForge tracker: http://sourceforge.net/tracker2/?group_id=21302&atid=121302 The bugs forum should be mentioned as well, and we should provide the URL for it in the FAQ item. ** Why does Celestia always use 100% of the CPU? We should mention that on Windows, Celestia will not use much CPU time when it is minimized. ** How can I make Celestia use less CPU time? It would also be useful to note that vsync should be enabled in the Windows control panel (this is the default setting.) If vsync is not enabled, Celestia will render frames as fast as it can, even if this is faster than the rate at which the monitor can display them. ** I can't turn off the Red/Green diamond in the center of the selected planets. This item is obsolete for 1.6.0. The new version of Celestia has an animated cursor for the selection. Unlike the puzzling diamond, it will hopefully be immediately clear to the user what the animated cursor is for. Currently, it is enabled/disabled along with markers with Ctrl+K, but this might change before the final release. ** Sometimes the planets and moons are far away from where their orbits are drawn. Eliminate "Starting with Celestia v1.3.2" (I intend to address this problem in 1.7.0, but no need to mention that in the FAQ :) )
