Indeed! As I wrote to you, I had Influenza (seasonal flu) twice in my life...and it was so horrible that I am fully saturated for the rest of it. While a cold bath is certainly effective in bringing down the high fever, diving into cold water constitutes an immense shock to the body, notably since the latter is considerably weakened by the high fever. So this recipe is certainly OFF LIMITS for the elderly...

PS: With a fever of 40 degrees centigrade, say, your heart beat is around 130/minute, day and night! This is the recommended rate for middle-aged people while jogging for half an hour or so...Hence no surprise that one feels pretty smashed after 5 days with such high fever.

I'd heard something the other day about the "college environment" having something to do with the large number of cases in the age ranges you've been noting concentrations in.

And, hello all once again. I'd been away doing various things over the summer. Nice to see you all again. :D

It's about time for another update, since clearly the second wave of Swine flu infections has started now. It is expected that during the northern winter season, many more serious cases and fatalities will occur.

Here is an update plot of the weekly number of new Swine flu infections in Germany.
(KW = KalenderWoche <=> calendar week)

along with the new modified trend as function of time

(from Germany's Robert-Koch institute, as of Oct. 29)

One can see clearly that the weekly rate of new infections is now again close to the peak of the first wave in summer, after a minimum in September.

Meanwhile there are 6 Swine flu deaths in Germany! The total number of registered Swine flu infections in Germany is 29907 by Oct 29. Germany is still the country with the lowest number of Swine flu deaths. The 6 fatalities all occured during the last 2 weeks!

Vaccination?

Celestians are brave! ;-) :blue:

Why don't you let us know a bit about your side effects during the coming days??
I suppose in GB you are also getting Pandemrix (or its GB equivalent) by default?

CC,

everyone can insist in principle to receive the 'tame' vaccination =Celvapan (=> "Polititian", soldier, pregnant women,...), containing no amplifiers and no mercury....But since there is no free dinner here, the protection from Celvapan is less good than from the default vaccin = Pandemrix (due to the lack of amplifiers).

That "amplifiers" leave me a bit perplex... Does Mercury (Hg) enhance the drug? I wonder whether with a bit of Vanadium (V) and Molybdenum (Mo) does make best. Surely would make the vaccin more strong.

Germany's Robert Koch institute emphasizes that the Hg content is completely harmless: it's purpose is only the conservation of the vaccin: so 3 shots can be given from one standard dose of Pandemrix within 24h => just a money saving argument. They furthermore state that the amount of Hg only corresponds to 1/4 of the daily amount of Hg intake via food.

No side effects 'cept for a sore arm... it's still a bit sore now, although I am a softy!... Oh... and an insatiable desire for beer!
Yes... Pandemrix in the mix... looking forward to developing fur and black eyes.

Friends,

now the "Swine party" really starts...

Recently, the number of new Swine flu infections in Germany doubles in each week, which signals a clearcut exponential growth law!

Here is the latest (somewhat frightening) graph of new weekly infections from Germany's RKI:
Note the last bin! The first peak on the left was in August (1st wave), then there was the minimum in September and thereafter now, the 2nd wave is "exploding"...

Image

and this plot illustrates the corresponding strong rise of the total number of infections in Germany:

Image

During the past week, 6 people died and as of today we got 10 fatalities due to Swine flu in Germany. Remember, we had NONE until about 2 weeks ago!

Hi friends,

1.5 hours ago, my wife and I got our Swine flu shot. Since beginning of this week, everyone can get a vaccination in Germany, irrespective of age, professional activity or health risk category. As mostly in Europe, the vaccine is Pandemrix. It's pros and cons were discussed a lot in the media...

In Hamburg, things seem to be well organized and indeed, there was almost no waiting required (~ 5 minutes). Three people in white were concerned with us: A lady behind a desk, who took my written OK statement. The medical doctor (she was from an eastern country) who performed the shot and answered 1-2 questions of mine. Finally, a man sitting in the corner who was watching us, whether we were possibly getting into an allergic shock state (he had the most boring job, I gather ;-) ).. Apparently such allergic shocks develop in the first minutes after the injection and the doctors only got ~ 90 secs for action. Fortunately, they are VERY rare.

Before entering this general health institution, there was a kiosk where forms and infos were distributed.

The doctor told me that (a considerable amount of) immunity will be acquired already after 1-1.5 weeks. They are still studying whether a second shot will be necessary. If so, we shall be phoned in about 3 weeks from now.

Now let's see what happens. So far nothing, but there will be most probably more in 3-4 hours from now.
