Celestia crashes when displaying spacecrafts

Postby mbar » Sun Jan 03, 2010 7:37 am

I installed Celestia on my new laptop, It works OK except when going very close to most of the Spacecraft (cassini, Huygens, Mir , Hubble...). Then it crashes. However, this crash does not happen with Galileo and ISS that are displayed correctly.
Thanks for any help
Michel

Check the julian date (menu time )and watch whether is up to date (now) since that spacecrafts you wouldn't see it. Otherwise do you have altered the configuration files for that spacecrafts? Check whether there isn't errors in typing.
Never at rest.

mbar,

What version of Nvidia Quadro drivers are installed?

Crashes usually are caused by buggy drivers, so they need to be kept up to date.
Since you have a Quadro card, though, this may conflict with the certification requirements of whatever professional 3D application you use.

I never touch the configuration files. I carefully checked the dates at which the spacecraft should show up. Actually, selecting a spacecraft then using the "G" command, I clearly see a small white spot at the right place but then, approaching and when one should see the real structures (for some structures I even can see the spacecraft for few tenths of second) I got the splash

mbar,

Do you have any additional addons installed, or do you have simply the basic Celestia package only?
If you do have any addons installed, then the first test to do would be to rule out conflicts with these by disabling all extra addons, and then run with the standard Celestia package only.

If you only have the standard package installed, then you caan ignore this advice.

mbar,

Unfortunately, I can't find any drivers on Nvidia's Web site for the 2700, only for the 2000, and they're older than what you list :( Driver updates will have to be downloaded from the Web site of the company that made your laptop.

You might try disabling some (or all) of the hardware graphics acceleration in the Windows display menu to see if that helps.

Thanks a lot Selden, you were right, I download (no problem  ) and carefully install the new driver:

NVIDIA Quadro FX 2700M Yes DISPLAY 6.14.11.9562 20/11/2009 NVIDIA oem53.inf Not Available PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_063A&SUBSYS_019B1028&REV_A1\4&5E5D6AA&0&0008

it seems to work fine

Selden,
Incidently, I really downloaded the driver from the Nvidia site, without any problem. (You have to look at the driver laptop subdivision or something like that  ) Thank you again. Everything works fine.

I have the same problem, except that my pilots are up to date and I use a ATI. My computer:
- CoreQuad 2.6GHz
- Mother board nVidia
- Memory 8G
- CG ATI HD4850 512 Gold sample
- Windows Seven 64

I'm using the Celestia 1.7-qt and it works great (better than the 1.6 which has problems under Seven I think).

I must say something: the problem is only with the addon "ISS construction", yes the huge one.
I deleted the 'standard' one to avoid conflicts, but, well, same problem that above.
OK, it is said that the model is huge, but huge so much? There's no memory-save? If I export in cmod file, will it be better?
Sorry if I say something stupid. :)
